Facebook ‘Fan Check’ Is NOT A Virus

Facebook ‘Fan Check’ Is NOT A Virus

logo-facebookOn September 7, there was a flurry of blog posts and reports that the popular Facebook Fan Check application supposedly spreads a malware through the Facebook accounts. The application will tell you who your top Facebook friends are based on an algorithm as to how engaged they are with you.

Today, Facebook announced that the application itself, though buggy, is NOT a virus. Facebook has disabled some of the app’s functionality due to other concerns.

Facebook’s @Mentions Is Now Available!

Facebook’s @Mentions Is Now Available!

logo-facebookAs we reported last Friday, the Twitter-like feature of using the @ symbol to include people in your messages on Facebook is now LIVE! The feature doesn’t just include usernames, but also allows you to add Facebook pages, events, groups and more.

If you go to your Facebook account and include the “@” symbol in your status update, a drop-down menu will appear that allows you to choose from your list of friends and other connections, including groups, events, applications and Pages. Soon, you’ll be able to tag friends from applications as well. The “@” symbol will not be displayed in the published status update or post after you’ve added your tags.

Facebook Adds @Mentions Like Twitter

Facebook Adds @Mentions Like Twitter

logo-facebookCopying a feature right out of the Twitter playbook, Facebook today adds the @Mention feature to it’s social network. Facebook has termed the feature as ‘tagging’ because it will not only reference friends, but groups, pages and even events!

Now, when you are writing a status update and want to add a friend’s name to something you are posting, just include the “@” symbol beforehand just like you would on Twitter. As you type the name of what you would like to reference, a drop-down menu will appear that allows you to choose from your list of friends and other connections, including groups, events, applications and Pages. Soon, you’ll be able to tag friends from applications as well. The “@” symbol will not be displayed in the published status update or post after you’ve added your tags.

Ladies Love Their Twitter #HunkAlert

Ladies Love Their Twitter #HunkAlert

Image27Sarah Marshall down in Louisiana has come up with a little treat for the ladies of Twitter. She is the creative brains behind #HunkAlert. Ladies can nominate their favorite hunks they come across on Twitter. The more nominations a hunk gets the higher his ranking to ultimately gain a Top 5 ranking or even a Hunk of the Year? (Yes guys there is a #BabeAlert as well, but we are talking to the ladies in this article.)

Now the basic purpose of #HunkAlert is apparently to “recognize and honor those individuals for their Twitter community participation, social interaction and outstanding qualities …” Being a guy myself I’m not quite sure what other ‘outstanding qualities’ they are referring to and I’m scared to ask! Don’t ask don’t tell right?

New Service Fights Twitter Spammers

New Service Fights Twitter Spammers

Image24As you can tell from several of my Tweets, I’m getting very tired of spammers on Twitter. Then again, when you have over 37,000 followers what should I expect. Did I really think that I would have 37,000 real, interactive followers? That’s why some of us with large Twitter accounts have an alternate personal account which is much smaller. Even with a smaller account for personal use, how do you keep the spammers out and only allow real people who want to truly interact with you?

There is a new service called TrueTwit.com. It works on the same premise as a typical message board where a link is sent back to the follow requester to confirm they are not a robot. Once the follower enters the CAPTCHA code then they are validated and confirmed as human. Look, if someone goes through this much trouble in order to follow and interact with you they must be worth it!

Twitter Changes Follower Page Format

Twitter Changes Follower Page Format

twitter_logoThis afternoon Twitter changed the format of their follower pages as well as the URL’s for those pages. Because no one else has reported on these changes – including Twitter themselves – we can only make a few obvious assumptions based on previous news reports as to why they made these moves.

Some of the visual changes we noticed appear to be an attempt to thwart software programs that harvest followers in order to build up follower numbers. One thing we noticed is the alignments of the thumbnail pic with the username and real name are different which can affect those programs that relied on a more compressed page (as before) to click on the follow buttons.

Kevin Smith’s 24 Hour Twitter Marathon

Kevin Smith’s 24 Hour Twitter Marathon

twitter_logoTo promote his latest book, “Shootin’ the Sh*t With Kevin Smith” and 15-city tour, Kevin Smith has announced plans to conduct an uninterrupted 24 hour online Q&A on Twitter this Labor Day (Monday, September 7th). And to top it off, there is a press release to let everyone know about the publicity stunt Kevin is pulling. Check out this quote directly from his press release:

“This is not news at all. In fact, it’s kinda stupid. But I wanna see if I can do it. I’ve been training for this my whole life, simply by being a lazy fat-ass who’d rather stare at a screen than better himself with a brisk constitutional. Someone asked what my training regiment is gonna be, and I told them I’ve already stockpiled lots of Count Chocula.”

Yep, he called it stupid! Too funny. Check out the entire press release after the jump for more information:

T-Mobile Facebook Support For Sidekicks

T-Mobile Facebook Support For Sidekicks

t-mobile-logoT-Mobile announced yesterday that older Sidekick models can now access Facebook through a free to download application. There are currently over 65,000 Sidekick users already using the Facebook app on the newer models, but that number should increase after making the app compatible across legacy Sidekick devices.

In other news regarding T-Mobile and social networking – the company also announced a Twitter application for Sidekick, however they are charging $1.99 for the app. Now, I realize that $1.99 isn’t a lot of money, but why would you give away a Facebook app and then turn around and charge for the Twitter app? I’m way confused on this one. If I were T-Mobile, wouldn’t you make the two hottest social networking apps available for FREE on your device so you can gain more 2-year contract signups? I dunno, that’s why I’m not in the mobile communications business I guess.

Yahoo Meme Competes With Twitter?

Yahoo Meme Competes With Twitter?

memeIf you’re like me, I like to create accounts on every social networking or media streaming site as soon as access is possible just in case the service happens to take off mainstream. As narcicistic as that may be, I will attempt to alert you of new services as they come along.

Yahoo has launched their attempt at the microblogging arena by bringing us Yahoo! Meme in English. A few weeks ago Yahoo launched the platform in Spanish and Portugese, but now they are taking aim at the more mainstream by adding English to the mix. Even though it has similarities to other already existing platforms, it has an initial appearance of a weak competitor to Tumblr, Twitter and other platforms if you compare features.

Catch Tweets As Blog Comments

Catch Tweets As Blog Comments

chatcatcherAfter spending the last two days creating this new blog site as part of Rockland USA’s redirection of efforts I spent a few hours looking over the site. I wanted to experiment with new ways of creating interaction of each blog article and display those numbers on the site. It has been my experience with celebrity blogging that people on Twitter would comment on the article as a tweet, but not comment on the WordPress site itself. That was frustrating until today when I discovered a relatively new plug-in called Chat Catcher.

Mass Follow and Unfollow Twitter Users

Mass Follow and Unfollow Twitter Users

logo-buzzomOne of my Sunday morning Twitter rituals is to unfollow all those who have decided to unfollow me. I am one of the few that subscribe to the reciprocation theory of Twitter – if you follow me I will follow you in return or visa versa. However, many people seem to take advantage of this just to get you to follow in return only to unfollow you later once they got your follow. On this particular morning I have over 2,000 to unfollow. Did you follow that?

One of my followers from Amsterdam (@Jankovitch) caught my tweet regarding my mass unfollowing work and asked me what I used to accomplish this. Because my follower/following numbers are 32,000+ and growing by several thousand a week, I cannot use many of the established services. One I can still use is TWITin.
