My Approach To Twitter Following Has Both Pros And Cons
Twitter is huge. With that there are many who have varied approaches on who they will and will not follow. There is a great number of those who refuse to follow anyone unless the know them – similar to Facebook. Others have signed up for one of those pesky follower-generating tools or websites that will allow you to amass thousands of followers (NOTE: most of these sites have been shut down or disabled).
I prefer to follow just about anyone who takes the time to follow me with very few exceptions. Social networking is all about socializing and meeting new people with new ideas. Reciprocating seems like a very easy way to accomplish this. Plus, it provides a larger audience for my content as well.
The problem with this approach is that it basically makes your Twitter stream useless. I have so many followers that I can’t follow any conversation unless I use a third party tool such as Seesmic. Twitter has created the ability to create lists where I can narrow down my friends or content into nice customizable lists which is handy if I don’t have my desktop Twitter apps handy.
It’s not about having a huge follower number as it is about marketing and learning from a diverse audience. If you spam in my stream you can count yourself as removed.
