BlogTV Increases Page Load Speeds

BlogTV has shown some modest increases in viewership and traffic. This has also lent itself to some frustrating page load times for members based on the number of ‘friends’ he or she has. A member with several hundred friends could wait 5-15 seconds (or more) for any video stream page to load and that doesn’t include the 15 second video ad placement if you don’t have a ‘Pro’ account.

What caused the delay in page loads? The original thought was to load the chat with all of your friend whether they were online or not, show the status of those friend and the ability to interact with them even if they weren’t in the current page. Sort of an instant messenger built directly into the main chatroom experience.

BlogTV heard the concerns of users and has made the chat lighter with increased loading times. Instead of loading the entire friends list into a video chat, they now only load in the ones that are currently online at BlogTV. If they are coded ‘grey’ they are on BlogTV but not in the current chatroom. Coded ‘olive’ means they are in the current chat.

We tested it this morning and did noticed a dramatic difference in our load times.
