YouTube Questions Validity Of ‘Star’ Ratings System For Videos
YouTube something very interesting to the public today. This has been an argument I’ve raised before on another blog site questioning the real purpose or validity of the 5 star ratings system for user generated video content on YouTube.
YouTube presented this chart showing the number of videos that receive specific star ratings: one star for when you loathe something, five for when you love it. By looking at the chart below an overwhelming majority of videos on YouTube have a stellar five-star rating:

The theory from YouTube is that when people rate a video it’s pretty much all or nothing. If it’s a great video, people give it a 5 star rating. If the video sucks it is ignored and you move onto the next video. YouTube says that the ratings system is currently being used as a ‘seal of approval’ and not an editorial indicator of what the community thinks about the video.
YouTube now brings up several questions that they would like answers to: if the majority of videos are getting five stars, how useful is this system really? Would a thumbs up/thumbs down be more effective, or does favoriting do the trick of declaring your love for a video?
What do you think? How useful are ratings? How do you use them? Please leave a comment below.
